Kenyan Safari Birthday Party!

We had Keenan's third birthday party today. It was a few weeks early since his actual birthday will be in Kenya!

The theme was safari, and we had a blast! I tried to make everything as "African" as I could, and with the help of some of Sarah's African stuff, I didn't need to buy very many decorations!

The main dish was African Peanut Stew, over rice (thanks for the recipe, Mom!) which turned out really well and was a huge hit! Wendi brought some really yummy fried plantain chips that she made! There was also lots of other snack foods, and kid friendly stuff.

Most of the husbands were either away at conferences, or post call, so Matt and Philip were the lonely guys. =)

Keenan got pretty overwhelmed with all the people and everything that was going on, and with kids playing with his stuff everywhere, and had a hard time sharing and being nice, but Philip worked with him and was able to get him calmed back down.

Instead of doing traditional gifts (although some people cheated and brought gifts too), we decided to have people give money to the "Buy a Goat" program in Kenya. The goats are given to needy families, who can then use the milk for drinking, or sell it to make a profit. With the generosity of our friends, we are able to buy Three goats! Wow!

Birthday boy this morning with some gifts from us and Grandpa and Grandma E.

With his Hudson Hornet car from Moriah =)

The family room party set up

The Africa wall (with a red Maasai blanket from Kenya and embroidered African pillow from Mom E)

Giving goody bags

Moriah in her own little African sari =)

Before I go, let me leave you with a "recipe" that I found that cracked me up! =0)

Easy Elephant Stew

1 medium sized elephant
1 ton of coarsely chopped broccoli
Salt and pepper to taste
2 African rabbits (optional)

You will need a very large kettle. Cut elephant into bite sized pieces. Add broccoli and seasonings. Cover with water and cook over an open fire for about two weeks.

If unexpected guests show up, the rabbits may be added (but only if necessary because nobody likes to find a hare in his stew).

Serves approximately thirty five hundred people.

Thank you to all our friends who came and helped make Keenan's special day so much fun! =0)

Wow Joia,

I'm so impressed with your party! I LOVE the masks! I LOVE the goody-bags! I LOVE the African outfits, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cake! I know your cakes are always awesome, but this one was splendiferous! You have a lucky almost-three-year-old whose mommy loves him a lot to go to so much work for his party!
Happy birthday Keenan,

The decorations, the food, the cake.....wow..the cake!! I really wanted another piece, but thought it would be so rude to ask for one to--go!!. (I was struggling to fit into John's shirt as it was!!)Thanks so much for including me in the festivities. I love that I can get to know you and your precious family.

Joan
