Our first travel dayon our trip home is over. We are staying in South Carolina, just north of Savannah, Georgia.
(By Philip) Our first few hours on the road this morning didn't get us nearly as far as we would have liked, since we got stuck in some nasty traffic multiple times. The first was on the DC beltway less than 15 minutes after leaving. Apparently there was quite an accident according to a road sign I saw while trying to find a detour but all four lanes were closed down. We didn't detour enough and got caught in all the traffic being forced off of the highway, that ended up costing us nearly an hour. After getting back on I-95 it was stop and go all the way to Richmond where a ton of people finally took the exits heading toward Virginia Beach and Norfolk. The slow downs were intermittent until South Carolina. We passed a sign around mile marker 60 that said "large accident, MM 40, be prepared to stop." I didn''t really believe that if they had time to put up a sign 20 miles earlier that the traffic could still be so bad, until we ended up parked around MM 53, literally. Fortunately, we were able to get off and using Garmin's 24 mile detour, mostly at 60 mph instead of 70, we ended up only loosing 20 minutes to that boondogle. So all in all I guess we're doing pretty well to be 5 miles from Georgia.
The kids have done quite well, although it is obvious that they are both pretty sick of being in the van (not surprising after the past couple of weeks!)
We're praying for a great night's sleep for all four of us and a safe, happy trip home tomorrow! Can't wait to get back to all our Florida peeps! =)
