A Sad Day for Eglin...

Today (Wednesday), after being reported missing for an hour, at about 3:00, two of Eglin's F-15C fighter jets collided in mid air over the Gulf of Mexico. They were doing a training exercise about 50 miles south of Panama City.

The two pilots ejected and were rescued by the Coast Guard (with the help of some other boats) in the next couple of hours. There's sharks out there, thankfully they didn't get there first! The two were flown by helicopter to Eglin's hospital. I was tracking the news coverage online as soon as I heard about it, but was getting updates faster from Philip than CNN! However, as soon as they were taken to Eglin, the news coverage was stagnant for quite a while (since reporters can't get on base and hang out outside the ER).

I was going to post about this sooner, but then Philip needed the computer, and I didn't really have any current news on the condition of either pilot. We found out this evening that one of them has died. The other is listed as being in good condition.

There is no word yet on the cause of the crash, and the jets (valued at $30 million each) have not been found yet.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of both pilots and to the 33rd Fighter Wing for their loss.
